Our candidate review is complete, and the DSEA is pleased to endorse the following candidates for a four-year term: 🗳Mick Hall 🗳Tom Feldman (incumbent) 🗳Youssef Boudjarane Our panel of reviewers is composed of Dunlap CUSD 323 parents/guardians of children with disabilities, representing diverse student needs across all building levels (Early Childhood through High School). Selected for their proven advocacy and deep community involvement, our reviewers have extensive knowledge of IEPs, 504 plans, ADA accessibility, and represent a wide range of IDEA disability categories. Their active engagement within disability communities ensures our evaluations are informed by valuable lived experience. Candidates were asked a series of 13 questions, which were then presented to our panel for scoring without the candidates' names attached. We have included a link to the full, scored responses below so the public can view and see how each candidate's position on a specific issue was evaluated without the candidate's name attached. The endorsed candidates have demonstrated the following desirable qualities, either in their record as a sitting board member or as a community member: Mick Hall's passion for Dunlap's success is well-known, and we are pleased that his vision includes robust vocational opportunities for all students, including those with disabilities. He has actively engaged with our community by attending various special education events and resource fairs to learn and understand the challenges facing our families both in and out of school. As an incumbent, Tom Feldman's record and his own words powerfully illustrate the reason for his endorsement. In a recent statement, Mr. Feldman said, "In a perfect world, we wouldn't be talking about adding accommodations or making things accessible. Ideally, these would already be in place. Some situations are so unique that they are hard to plan for ahead of time, but that shouldn't be thrown out as justification for not imagining the possibility and perhaps limiting some measure of potential." This proactive and inclusive perspective is why Mr. Feldman is a strong and accessible advocate on the board for special education, frequently demonstrating that he is not afraid to ask the hard questions and explain the reasoning behind his decisions. A newcomer to the Dunlap stage, Youssef Boudjarane has quickly engaged with our community with empathy and understanding. His experience as a prosecutor with the State's Attorney's Office gives him valuable insight into the challenges our youth are facing, including issues such as bullying and student safety, and his commitment to tackle cyber-bullying is a welcome one.
