Yesterday, Cheryl visited the Coastal Virginia affiliate of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) in Virginia Beach. She had a great meeting with Max Willey, board vice president and advocacy chair for NAMI Coastal Virginia, and with Martha McCrory, one of the two affiliate directors for the organization. NAMI has a mission to support, educate, and advocate for people living with mental health challenges and their families. Their office, located at 291 Independence Blvd. in the Pembroke 4 Office Building, is "cheerful and relaxing," said Cheryl. "You are welcomed into their space by the 'NAMI Llama' wearing a straw hat." They offer a variety of support groups, educational classes, community outreach initiatives, and presentations to any group that wants or needs to learn more. Everything is confidential, supportive, and free. 📖 Day 24 – Finally caught up to real time (and feeling a little blue) There’s a heaviness tonight I can’t quite shake. No obvious reason – I had a good day. Woke up at Gatwick (hotel, not a bench – we’re levelling up, babes) after a late flight back from Tunisia. A solid seven hours’ sleep, a bit of journaling, then proceeded to bankrupt Sofitel’s breakfast buffet. Full English? Obliterated. Several pastries? Don’t mind if I do. Fruit for balance. Enough tea to hydrate the entire north terminal. Honestly, it’s lovely to have my appetite back – although at this rate I’m convinced my knees will file for divorce by Christmas. As for last night’s flight… cue excited Brits necking “one last” gin before reality sets in. And me? Staring down a choice between tonic & Pringles or tea. Who is she? I went with tea – and a family-sized bag of Maltesers I swore I’d “just nibble.” Reader, I inhaled them. No regrets. I was meant to go to an AA meeting tonight, but honestly? I couldn’t be bothered. Maybe that’s why I’m feeling a little off – guilt creeping in. I’ve been to meetings before during sober stints and they absolutely work for so many people. I don’t even mind the higher power thing (I’ve dropped to my knees enough times to know there’s something bigger than me out there). But it’s the tired village halls, the flickering fluorescent lights, the cold plastic chairs. Sometimes the person running the meeting isn’t exactly oozing warmth either. Instead of leaving uplifted, I’ve left craving a large sauvignon. That probably makes me sound snobby, but honestly I want my recovery spaces to feel safe and life-affirming – not like the waiting room at Specsavers. So tonight I stayed home. Wrote. Reflected. Made a cuppa. Reminded myself: I’m doing it. I’m sober. I’m showing up for me. And that’s enough. #sobriety #villagehallsneedrevampingbabes

As someone with chronic/invisible illnesses and who has recently come out of the worst Rheumatoid Arthritis flare of my life lasting over 2 years, what helped most was to develop a deep devotion to myself. Like many mums, for years I over gave and self abandoned, resulting in my body turning on itself as a way to protect me. Healing has been about slowing down, coming back home to myself and taking care of me. Treating my body not as a machine needing to be fixed, but a garden that simply needed tending to. Letting go. Saying no. Learning to love myself the way I want to be loved. Getting to know, accept, appreciate and embrace all parts of myself. Cultivating courage to do the things that scared me. Finding ways to meet my own needs. Spending time being with myself ~ feeling, listening, attuning, allowing. Becoming the source of love, peace and happiness that I was longing for. While I may not be perfect or have it all figured out, I can honestly say that at 42 I am completely, unapologetically myself and living my truest, most authentic life helping other women be free. I would love to help you: - If you are a woman stuck in self limiting/sabotaging patterns of over giving, people pleasing, shrinking to keep the peace and ensure everyone else’s happiness but your own. - If you know there is a bigger, more fulfilling life out there for you, but something is holding you back. - If you want to be yourself but don’t know how to or are worried you won’t be accepted. - If you want to break free from codependency, be more self sufficient, resilient and confident in yourself. - If you have recently exited a relationship/marriage and are overwhelmed with grief, fear and uncertainty. - If you would like to thrive in your relationship or leave an unhealthy one. If you’re ready to take your power back and heal, I’m currently accepting a few new clients for somatic psychotherapy and transformative counselling/coaching. It's heartbreaking! 💔 With 44% of high school-aged kids reporting feeling consistently sad or hopeless, we want to bring a neurological perspective on the teen mental health crisis. Yes, there are hormones, some bad days, and things all teens will go through, but our kids are growing up in a very different world than we did. When you know the anxiety, depression, or emotional ups and downs your teen might be facing aren't just a "phase" or a mindset issue, you know it's time to take action to help. We see this all the time at TFC, and it's actually tied to how their nervous system is working. Your teen's Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) runs the show behind the scenes. It’s like the body’s emotional thermostat—it helps your teen handle stress, calm down, and feel safe. The ANS has two main parts: 1️⃣ Fight or flight mode (Sympathetic Nervous System): This kicks in when there’s stress or danger. Great in short bursts—but if it stays on all the time, it can lead to constant anxiety, overwhelm, and outbursts. 2️⃣ Rest and regulate mode (Parasympathetic Nervous System): This helps your teen calm down, sleep, focus, and emotionally reset. The vagus nerve is a big player here, and when it’s not working well, it’s hard for kids to feel safe or at ease. In many teens, this system is out of balance (or not bussin', as your teen might describe it 🤪). Their stress response is stuck on high alert, while the calming system is barely functioning. That’s called dysautonomia—and it’s a big reason why anxiety and depression are skyrocketing. 🚀 Our favorite thing is connecting with so many awesome teens and parents as the first step to real answers and healing.
