If you’re struggling with forgiving yourself, you’re not alone. It can take time—but it’s one of the most freeing and powerful things you can do, both spiritually and emotionally. Why God Wants Us to Forgive Ourselves 1. God is merciful, not condemning.�From a spiritual perspective, God desires healing and restoration, not punishment. When we hold onto guilt and shame, we block the grace and peace that God wants to give us. Forgiveness, including self-forgiveness, is a way of accepting that grace. 2. You can’t live fully in love while living in shame.�If you believe you’re unworthy or permanently damaged, it’s hard to receive love or give it fully. God wants us to love others as we love ourselves—and that starts with seeing ourselves the way He sees us: redeemed, valuable, and forgiven. 3. Forgiveness frees us to grow.�Spiritually, holding onto guilt is like living with chains. God wants us to live in freedom, to learn from mistakes, and to walk forward, not stay stuck in the past. Why Forgiveness Is Necessary for Good Mental Health 1. Reduces stress and anxiety:�Carrying guilt, resentment, or self-hatred creates chronic mental stress. Forgiveness—especially self-forgiveness—lowers cortisol, reduces anxiety, and gives peace of mind. 2. Breaks cycles of shame and self-sabotage:�When we don’t forgive ourselves, we often keep punishing ourselves, sometimes unconsciously. That can lead to destructive habits, depression, and low self-worth. 3. Improves relationships:�Self-forgiveness helps us show up better in relationships. We’re less defensive, more empathetic, and less likely to project our shame onto others. 4. Promotes healing and resilience:�Forgiveness, even when it’s hard, builds emotional strength. Be Yourself Fully By Sam Yau Somewhere in the cradle of your early years the wild flame in you flickered, dimmed words melted on your tongue before they could leap your truth, a bird with clipped wings, silenced mid-flight The anger of a child was an unwanted visitor met with frowned gazes and sharp reprimands to survive, you gave away your edges chiseled your shape to fit the hands that fed you and kept you warm A chameleon wrapped itself around you mimicking shapes that weren’t your own you wore their colors, learned their songs and forgot the rhythm where you belonged But each surrender carved holes in your core until the mirror could no longer recognize you What you abandoned was your body that sacred teacher fleshed with instincts its whispering truths you learned to ignore you drifted upward, untethered, a phantom hovering above the clay of your own being How can a compass move when its needle is rusted with repression how can a river know its course when its source has been dammed Years of self-denial in your formative years not allowed to feel fully and express them you never developed a strong sense of self drifting on life’s path with no center or aim seeking to please everyone else but yourself witnessing life like a ghost that doesn’t belong a common symptom suffered by the mentally ill When tears were told to tarry, joy was told to wait when anger was shackled in chains of restraint you closed the wells, buried the springs deep inside you have lost yourself But oh, your soul came here to feast to drink in the hues of a storm to relish in the peace of a breeze to taste the fire, the frost, the rains to ache, and to love through pain You were not made to wear masks of politeness to wear the shape of another’s dream you were born to live vast horizons to inhabit the entire spectrum of your feelings Your voice, long silenced, can still rise your instincts, long quiet, can still guide you so crack the dam; let the roar return call yourself out of hiding let the authentic you breathe freely again There is no greater rebellion than this to be yourself, fully in a world that asks you not to
