Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs will change the way you see people. People don’t progress upward in the diagram without the needs below being met. It explains why someone might underperform, disengage, or react emotionally, not because they’re lazy, entitled, or disrespectful… But because their core needs are unmet. Before someone can think clearly, perform consistently, or buy into a bigger vision… They need to feel safe. They need to feel seen. They need to have something stable to stand on. This doesn’t mean you excuse poor behavior. But it does mean you understand what’s behind it, so you can lead more effectively and build a culture that actually works. Leaders who skip this… end up saying things like “They should just…” Leaders who grasp this… build environments where people can rise.
