Even rainy days are brighter and lighter when we are happy. In this 4-week course, we will unlock and explore Buddhist wisdom on happiness: What and where exactly is happiness? How do we identify and clear away our obstacles to happiness? How can we adopt a happiness habit for ourselves?
July 1 - Decoding happiness: We all want to be happy, but what is it that we are really seeking? Understanding the nature and source of happiness is our first step towards having more of it in our lives. We'll look at common misconceptions about happiness and how to achieve it, as well as Buddha's insights on the nature of happiness and where it's to be found.
July 8 - Getting Unstuck: Common negative habits of mind can easily and instantly derail our happiness. We'll look at how to identify these and the techniques Buddha taught to reduce and even abandon them. In particular, we'll look at the common habits of anger (irritation, annoyance, impatience) and anxiety (worry, rumination, negative thinking) and the power of both patience and kindness to defuse them.
July 15 - Turning on the Light: How can we access happiness in a meaningful way every day? In this session we'll see how loving-kindness is a generator that powers the brightness of our own happiness. How is it that when we show others care, we become more happy? We'll unpack this seeming contradiction and discover how to cultivate this simple but profound experience for ourselves.
July 22 - Becoming an Agent of Happiness: We want others to be happy. But our own distress is often intensified by witnessing the suffering of others. In this session, we will see how Buddha's teachings on compassion give us the capacity to respond to others' sufferings without being depleted ourselves. In fact, we'll see that this practice of compassion only intensifies the brightness of our own happiness.
