What’s the number 1 predictor that says “You’re NOT going to make it as a new leader”? It’s if you’ve ever been a top-performing “Doer”.
I know, I know…
That sounds counterintuitive, doesn’t it?
Because if you’re great at getting things done, surely that makes you the best person to manage other Doers?
I don’t believe that’s true. Because here’s what’s crazy:
Many high-performing “Doers” end up crashing and burning as new leaders. Which means:
Team culture deteriorates…
Motivation falls off a cliff…
Productivity tumbles…
The net result? Our once high-performing leaders end up micromanaging, burned out, and getting crushed by imposter syndrome.
Which is not a great state to be in.
Though it’s really not their fault. It’s just nobody ever told them about “Doer Programming”.
If you don’t know about Doer Programming…
It’s where the experiences you’ve had up til now reinforce your urges to solve day-to-day problems…
Get your hands dirty…
Overload your to-do list, and so on.
For instance:
Have you ever been high-fived for fixing a critical problem? That’s Doer Programming.
Or did your boss, your former teachers, or your parents ever applaud you for nailing a challenge?
Or did they praise you for working hard?
Everyone likes to earn praise, don’t they? Well, that’s where our Doer Programming comes from.
And it’s this hard-wired programming that makes DOING feel so irresistible… even though, deep down, we’d kill to take a step back.
And we suspect that constantly DOING causes more harm than good.
Which is why – one of the first things I teach new leaders – is how to release their Doer Programming…
So they can fully step into their role as a Leader.
