Kimberley was born partially sighted. “I had a lot of eye operations and procedures,” she remembers. “This was quite traumatic and scary as a young child.” It was during this time that Kimberley developed a love of art. As a teen, she discovered her talent for illustration and was named RNIB’s Young Illustrator of the Year. A double retinal detachment in 2018 caused her to lose her remaining vision. Two years later, her mum had a stroke. “I was experiencing a lot of emotions, especially knowing that I was becoming a carer with a disability myself,” Kimberley says. She got in touch with our Counselling team, who helped her with vital emotional support. “The final year of my degree ended up being a long and drawn-out process, but I managed to turn everything around.” Now, Kimberley is studying for a master’s degree and works as a freelance illustrator. She’s even collaborated with the fashion brand Warehouse. “I’m determined to continue to pursue art in this new way,” she says.
