*Praveena didn’t just build a bathroom, she built a movement. In the village of Jatwara, Madhya Pradesh, women had been bathing in the open for generations. There were no bathrooms, no privacy, just fear, shame, and growing health issues. Skin infections, rashes, and reproductive complications were common. But the pain ran deeper, it stripped women of their dignity. Then came 17-year-old Praveena, a young girl from the Sahariya tribal community, who decided something had to change. She didn’t wait for help. She collected stones from a nearby river, used sticks and bamboo for a door, and built a private bathing space beside her home, with her own hands. “I used to feel ashamed while bathing,” she shared. “Now, I bathe freely, I stay clean, and I feel healthy.” That one step turned into a ripple effect. Inspired by Praveena’s initiative, 16 more families in Jatwara followed suit. Creating their own private bathrooms using simple, local materials. With support from CRY, the idea spread far and wide. Today, over 230 bathrooms have been built across 15 villages. Hundreds of women now enjoy safer, healthier, and more dignified lives.
