*Praveena didn’t just build a bathroom, she built a movement. In the village of Jatwara, Madhya Pradesh, women had been bathing in the open for generations. There were no bathrooms, no privacy, just fear, shame, and growing health issues. Skin infections, rashes, and reproductive complications were common. But the pain ran deeper, it stripped women of their dignity. Then came 17-year-old Praveena, a young girl from the Sahariya tribal community, who decided something had to change. She didn’t wait for help. She collected stones from a nearby river, used sticks and bamboo for a door, and built a private bathing space beside her home, with her own hands. “I used to feel ashamed while bathing,” she shared. “Now, I bathe freely, I stay clean, and I feel healthy.” That one step turned into a ripple effect. Inspired by Praveena’s initiative, 16 more families in Jatwara followed suit. Creating their own private bathrooms using simple, local materials. With support from CRY, the idea spread far and wide. Today, over 230 bathrooms have been built across 15 villages. Hundreds of women now enjoy safer, healthier, and more dignified lives. In a move to improve social welfare and employment opportunities for the disabled, Chinese and Pakistani companies signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on January 12 to bring an inclusive, disability-friendly coffee shop model to Pakistan. The initiative aims to address the persistent challenge of employment for people with disabilities in the South Asian country. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), more than one billion people worldwide live with some form of disability. In Pakistan, around 6.2 percent of the population is affected, many of whom face barriers to education, employment, and social participation, according to the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The MoU was signed by Qaiser Nawab, CEO of Brainy Bridge International, and Xiong Hongxia, General Manager of YUAN MENG 123 Technology. The agreement marks an initial step towards establishing Pakistan’s first all-inclusive coffee shop, ensuring it aligns with accessibility and employment inclusion standards. In China, YUAN MENG 123 Technology has developed accessible coffee spaces designed to provide barrier-free facilities, information, and services. The company integrates digitization and standardization into its operations and has been involved in initiatives related to accessible transportation and employment for persons with disabilities. The coffee shops operate with a focus on hiring individuals with disabilities, including baristas with hearing impairments, who often have enhanced sensory perception that contributes to their coffee-making skills. Over the past three years, 12 such cafés have provided training and employment supervision to 200 baristas, supported five disability-led startups. Brainy Bridge International, a company focused on business development, public relations, and marketing, aims to introduce this model in Pakistan, and explore the model’s potential in other countries. “This collaboration is not just about bringing a business model to Pakistan but about fostering a culture of inclusivity and expanding employment opportunities for persons with disabilities,” said Qaiser Nawab. “We look forward to working with our Chinese counterparts to support the social and economic empowerment of differently-abled individuals in our country.”

#GroundUpStories | In 2009, Ratan Singh and 96 others in Madhya Pradesh’s Vidisha district were selected for allocation of land rights under the Forest Rights Act, 2006. Out of these 97, 29 were handed a letter during a ceremony that congratulated them on getting their forest rights. The letter said that the right to the land would be protected and it could be utilised without any obstacles, and that the coming generations would be able to take advantage of it. But nowhere did the letter mention how much area of land was allotted to each individual claimant. Whenever a claim is accepted under the Forest Rights Act, they are given a map of the land with the photo of the claimant and other personal information. But Ratan and the other recipients did not receive any such documentation. #Rights | Given Mizoram’s proximity to Myanmar, the Indian state has become the most favoured destination for Chin refugees who are facing persecution in Myanmar. Since March 2021, more than 30,000 Chin people have sought refuge in the state. India is not a signatory to the 1951 United Nations Refugee Convention, which defines the rights of asylum seekers and the responsibilities of host nations. Then what drives the camaraderie and love that the Mizo society feels for the Chin people, who were strangers to them even a few years ago?
