After Hurricane Helene devastated her home and community in South Carolina, Selenia Sadai knew she had to rebuild her life. But she wanted to do more — she wanted to help others rebuild, too. A coworker encouraged Selenia to check out the Red Cross, and not long after, she signed up to volunteer with the American Red Cross of South Carolina. As a new volunteer, Selenia quickly saw the impact disaster volunteers make on families affected by home fires. “Being able to go out and meet different people, being able to comfort individuals during a time of need — all of that is very satisfying for me,” Selenia said. “It gives me a sense of purpose, like I’m doing something in the world to help change it or make it better." Now, as a Disaster Action Team Lead, Selenia mentors new volunteers, helps manage supplies, and works to improve disaster response processes. She became a leader in her region and found a second family in the process. “We’re so tight-knit,” Selenia said. “These are people I never would have met if I hadn’t joined the Red Cross. You have people who are very good-hearted, caring, and loving.
