Join us for a celebration of Sir John Rutter’s 80th birthday year with a performance of his jubilant Gloria , a work filled with brass fireworks and joyful choral writing. Described as “the most gifted composer of his generation” , Rutter’s music captures hearts with its singable melodies and uplifting spirit. This concert also features James Whitbourn’s evocative Son of God Mass . Uniquely scored for choir, organ, and soprano saxophone, it has been described by Classic Today as ‘a gem, a masterpiece’ . Compellingly written throughout, at times contemplative and mysterious, at others soaring and exuberant, the music is exceptionally moving and always sensitive to the texts. There will be drama aplenty with brass and organ fanfares accompanying James MacMillan’s Summae Trinitati and Gerald Finzi’s God is gone up before works of peaceful reflection written by Paul Mealor and Cecilia McDowall. Alongside the renowned Southwark Cathedral organist, Simon Hogan, the internationally acclaimed all-female trombone group - Bones Apart - will surely make this powerful programme sparkle as they lead a stellar handpicked brass ensemble.
