Bagpipes, electric guitars, delay-drenched mandolins and seashells! You can expect an evening of epic music at EKKO in Utrecht. This show is the result of a unique collaboration between Utrecht and Porto musicians celebrating the rich heritage of traditional Portuguese Folk Music through a multicultural perspective. Traveling all the way from Portugal, 'O Marta' will be a guest artist opening the evening performing his own special take on Portuguese music. While the Red Oak Troubadours ft Isabel Martinez (NL/PT) take a multicultural approach, fusing it with the band's original influences from American Folk, Blues and Rock, O Marta (PT) takes a more abstract approach, deconstructing it and blending it with Drum and Bass and Experimental Electronic Music. Together, they take the audience on an immersive journey through a variety of Portuguese musical landscapes, sounds and stories that celebrate the musical diversity from this country. Joining the bands outside of the stage, a collective of artists and creatives will be exhibiting and selling their work. It began when four guys in high school started a band, never mind that they couldn’t really play their instruments. "In the early days our ambition was just to end the song together!" - Adam Clayton So instead of covering the hits of the day, they made up songs of their own that they actually could play. “1978 was a really exciting time for U2. We discovered F# minor. So we [now] had a fourth chord.” - Bono Their first two albums got them noticed. Their third and fourth albums got them on the radio. "I do think that rock music, when its engines are roaring, makes you want to run down the road, sell your house, call your mother and change the world." - Bono But it was The Joshua Tree that made them superstars. That album is not only their best selling (with 25 million copies worldwide), it’s also one of the biggest albums ever, right up there with Bridge Over Troubled Water and Nevermind. "A word I've always liked more than happiness…is joy. Happiness is a mood that comes and goes, whereas joy is just there." - Bono With fame came the backlash. And as U2 returned to the studio, Bono reckoned they needed to get rid of the baggage they’d taken on. The result was Achtung Baby, which Bono described as "the sound of four men chopping down The Joshua Tree." “I was not going for purity. I was trying to [screw] up the sound as much as possible, go for something that was definitely tampered with, that had a character that was not just the regular guitar sound." - The Edge Their reinvention didn’t stop there. They experimented with electronics and loops. They explored new territory. But not all of their fans were eager to follow. "U2 were in that position where we were really big, and no matter what we did, it was wrong." - Larry Mullen But they found their way back when they made peace with their past on the aptly titled album All That You Can’t Leave Behind. JONO McCLEERY (QUARTET SHOW) Jono McCleery is an English singer-songwriter who creates timeless music that is just as much influenced by the electronic and avant garde as it is by the more traditional folk and soul cannon. Since his self-released debut ‘Darkest Light’ came out in 2008, Jono has released a string of albums via Ninja Tune Recordings and collaborated with fellow artists across the musical spectrum including Maribou State, Portico (Quartet), and Maceo Plex. As well as having over 50 million streams worldwide, his music has been used in a number of television shows including Queen Sugar, Start Up and This Is Us. Jono sees his music as something which is constantly evolving, drawing inspiration from an ever-widening range of influences, and that seeks to connect. BERTEL HAUGEN Welsh born artist Bertel Haugen’s music is out of the left-field. Folk-driven, and eclectic – blending rustic charm with playful percussion from household items, crafting a whimsical, homespun sound uniquely his own. Limited capacity seated show. Laura Fernandez Madrid-born Laura Fernandez is a multi-talented artist: an acclaimed painter, a celebrated singer-songwriter, and a Steinway Artist. She’s performed internationally at renowned venues like Madison Square Garden and has shared stages with global icons such as Omara Portuondo. Her albums of original music, including *Un Solo Beso* and *Okay, Alright*, blend her Spanish roots with Latin and jazz and pop songwriting influences. In addition to her music, Fernandez hosts and produces the popular program *Café Latino* on JazzFM91. She was also recognized as one of the 10 Most Influential Hispanic Canadians in 2015. Quarrington & Adams Tony Quarrington and Zoey Adams have been collaborating for over twenty-five years, blending their talents into a distinctive and engaging act. Their songwriting partnership took off in 2017 when they created a full evening of original music for Sellers and Newell’s Speakeasy series in Toronto. Since then, they’ve written hundreds of songs across jazz, blues, pop, folk, swing, bluegrass, and Latin styles, with some even in Spanish and French. Their witty and sophisticated compositions have filled seven albums and even inspired a musical about the Dionne Quintuplets performed in North Bay. Quarrington’s jazz-infused guitar adds a vibrant spark, while Adams’s theatrical background brings a dynamic edge to their performances. Noah Zacharin Noah Zacharin is a Montreal-born guitar master and songwriter whose music defies genre boundaries. A performer since his teens, he’s released nine albums, most recently *Points of Light* (Sonic Peach), and his songs have been recorded by a range of Canadian and international artists. Zacharin has opened for legends like Odetta and Jesse Winchester, and critics have called him “in a league of his own.” In addition to his music, Zacharin is an award-winning poet, translator, and producer. His dynamic performances and songwriting are driven by a lifelong devotion to music’s poetic and expressive power. Howard Gladstone Toronto-born singer-songwriter Howard Gladstone crafts introspective music blending folk, jazz, roots and world influences. A life-changing spinal cord injury in 2014 deepened his creative path, leading to Hourglass(2017) and The Promise (2020). His latest album, Crazy Talk (2024), is his eighth release, featuring collaborations with Laura Fernandez and Tony Quarrington. Gladstone’s songs are marked by honesty, poetry, and quiet strength. He’s also the author of Timepieces, a book of his lyrics spanning his eight albums. The Toronto Star described his music as “a lost gem from another time.” Gladstone performs monthly at the Tranzac Club, continuing to share his art and build community. 296 Broadview is not yet a fully wheelchair accessible venue, with stairs between all levels.
