Shri Krishna's ascent to win the Parijata tree, Hoysalesvara Temple, Halebid, Karnataka, India, 12th Century. The Hoysaleswara temple, dating back to the 1121 C.E., is astounding for its wealth of sculptural details. The walls of the temple are covered with an endless variety of depictions from Hindu mythology, animals, birds and Shilabalikas or dancing figures. Yet no two sculptures of the temple are the same. This magnificent temple guarded by a Nandi Bull was never completed, despite 86 years of labour. The Jain basadi nearby are equally rich in sculptural detail. Belur and Halebid are 222 and 216 km from Bangalore, respectively. This temple is now being proposed as UNESCO World Heritage Site. Halebidu is located in Hassan District, Karnataka, India. Halebidu (which was previously called Dorasamudra or Dwarasamudra) was the regal capital of the Hoysala Empire in the 12th century. It is home to one of the best examples of Hoysala architecture in the ornate Hoysaleswara and Kedareswara temples. Halebidu literally means ruined city. This name is given because this city was ruined two times by Bahmani Sultanate. Halebidu was the 12th century capital of the Hoysalas. The Hoysaleswara temple was built during this time by Ketamala and attributed to Vishnuvardhana, the Hoysala ruler. It enshrines Hoysaleswara and Shantaleswara, named after the temple builder Vishnuvardhana Hoysala and his wife, Queen Shantala. Then it was sacked by the armies of Malik Kafur in the early 14th century, after which it fell into a state of disrepair and neglect. #mukulbanerjeephotography

Tucked at the top of Wushan’s main path, Dongyue Temple (also known as Zhongxing Dongyue Temple) is one of the city’s lesser-known historical gems. It’s been rebuilt, but the layout and feel remain intact. At the entrance, a bold plaque reads “善恶昭彰” — meaning “good and evil will be clearly judged.” A traditional moral phrase, it sets the tone for what this place once meant to local believers. Just behind the gate stands Hangzhou’s last remaining ancient opera stage. It’s compact but beautifully built, with flying eaves, red-and-gold detailing, and carved ridge creatures shaped like fish and dragons. Inside the main hall stands a pair of dragon-carved stone pillars — believed to date from the early Qing dynasty, and the only known example of their kind in Hangzhou. A quiet rear shrine and a pair of 500-year-old catalpa trees in the courtyard complete the experience. Calm and atmospheric, this is a lovely detour if you’re exploring the Wushan area.

Since 2017, archaeologists from Shaanxi, China and Kazakhstan have worked side by side, 🤝uncovering the secrets of ancient Central Asia. At the Rahat site, ancient settlements and tombs have emerged from the dust. In Issyk, the mystery of a royal burial mound is being revealed. And in the Aktogay, over 700 petroglyphs tell stories of life and belief from centuries ago. These joint expeditions reflect a deepening bond. As the second China–Central Asia Summit unfolded in Astana, the friendship between the two nations continues to bloom—rooted in shared history, and thriving through cooperation.✨#Archaeology #CulturalHeritage

The fort at Jaisalmer was not built in a day … not even a year. It was raised from the sand like a mirage with bones—each block of yellow sandstone quarried, carted, and placed by hands long since returned to the dust of the desert. In 1156 A.D., Rawal Jaisal, stood upon this hill and declared it his sanctuary. And so it came to be. From that hill, the fort grew like a hive, drenched in sun and swelling with caravans, camels, incense, and the slow hum of history being written in sandstone. It has seen the coming of Mughal riders and Maratha horsemen. It has withstood siege and monsoon, drought and neglect. And yet it still endures … not just in its turrets or temples or in the creaking wood of its merchant doors but in its people. As twilight stretched across the ramparts and the desert wind rustled through the jharokhas, I could hear laughter—bright and modern, echoing off walls older than Christopher Columbus’s maiden voyage. In a quiet corner of the fort’s inner maze, just outside a Jain temple, I came upon children playing cricket with a broomstick and a well-worn rubber ball. They live here—inside this ancient citadel—just as their ancestors had, tending to spice shops and shrines, guiding travelers, and carrying forward stories. One of the boys, grinning from ear to ear, pointed to the JHAROKHA behind us and said, “That’s where my grandfather says the ghosts live.” And just like that, the centuries folded in on themselves, and then I realized: the fort here is not only ancient stone, but a living thing—passed from the dead to the dreaming 🧙‍♂️🕌🇮🇳

🏞️Best of the Bulgarian Danube: Roman Ruins at Gigen When the Roman Empire was at its height, it maintained a defensive line of fortresses and cities along the Danube to protect itself from barbarian raids from the north. As the empire declined and shrank, many of these were abandoned. In the village of Gigen you will find the fascinating and mostly empty remains of one of the largest Roman cities along this part of the river. Ulpia Oescus began as a Roman military base in the 1st century AD. A century later it had become a major commercial and religious centre, complete with paved streets, elaborate temples, workshops and houses. In 328, the Emperor Constantine himself visited to inaugurate a bridge the Romans had built over the Danube. Today, thanks to partial archaeological research, the columns and pediments of its buildings lie among the overgrowth – a melancholy picture that will be a highlight of your Danube journey. #Auschwitz #Shoah #Mémoire #Histoire #Block10 #Pologne #Photographie Day 7 – The Window of Block 10 This photo was taken from inside Block 10 at Auschwitz I. It was the site of medical experiments conducted by SS doctors on women and children, all in the name of a corrupted science. Behind these walls, hundreds of women and children were mutilated, sterilized, tortured… without consent and with no hope of survival. Looking through this window is like peering into the shadows of history. Light may enter, but nothing can erase the darkness it reveals. #Auschwitz #Shoah #Memory #History #Block10 #Poland #Photography

Hope Abbey mausoleum, located in the Eugene Masonic Cemetery, will be open to the public on Sunday, June 29, from 1 to 4 pm. Designed by Ellis Lawrence and dedicated in 1914, the abbey is unique and fascinating. Eugene Masonic Cemetery Association board members will welcome visitors and provide information about the magnificently restored Egyptian Revival-style mausoleum and the historic cemetery, established in 1859. After visiting the Hope Abbey, walk the bark paths of the cemetery. Stroll and read the signage about Eugene and Mary Skinner and the many other pioneers for whom the cemetery is their final resting place. The cemetery is an official arboretum where you can enjoy the varied landscape as you learn about our permanent residents on the many recently cleaned and restored markers. Gates open at 1pm for drop-off, but there is no parking in the cemetery. Park on the street at the cemetery's entrance at 25th and University and walk up the path to the Abbey.

Alan's Chat | Walk into these beautiful statues to have a glimpse of ancient Chinese spiritual world These vivid colored statues are well preserved in Hongfu Temple, China's Xinzhou City. There are tall and thick fortress walls and brick plates around the temple, and a seven meter high earth rammed earth platform at the bottom, which is a fortress style temple. This is also very rare in ancient Chinese temple architecture and has high cultural value.

A spectacular and rare Roman sarcophagus was uncovered in Caesarea >>> A spectacular find, and the first of its kind in Israel: In archaeological excavations conducted by the Israel Antiquities Authority at the initiative of Caesarea development Corp., a Roman period marble sarcophagus (coffin) was uncovered, upon which was sculpted a special scene of the drinking contest between Dionysus (or Bacchus), the god of wine, and Heracles (Hercules), the mythological hero. The discovery will be presented on Thursday, June 12, 2025 in a lecture at “The Feast” conference to be held at the Eretz Israel Museum in Tel Aviv, in collaboration with the Israel Antiquities Authority, Tel Aviv University, and Bar Ilan University. “It was like a scene out of a movie,” say Nohar Shahar and Shani Amit, Israel Antiquities Authority archaeologists. “We began removing the soft, light sand of the dune, when suddenly the tip of a marble object popped up. The entire excavation team stood around excitedly, and as we cleared more sand, we couldn't believe what we were seeing – parts of a sarcophagus, upon which figures were carved: gods, animals, and trees. Each uncovered fragment was more impressive than the one before. In fact, in the very last hour of the excavation came the climax – an entire intact side of the sarcophagus, which was buried in the sand, was uncovered, which portrays the scene of Hercules lying on a lion skin, holding a cup in his hand.” The broken sarcophagus was handed over to the experts of the Israel Antiquities Authority's conservation team. There, conservators Solomon Gavriel, Ilya Armanovsky and Gadmo Vajpo, together with architect Ido Rosental, worked on restoring, cleaning and assembling the parts. Thanks to the restoration, the scenes have been fully revealed: In the center we see Dionysus, the god of wine, and around him a lively retinue of a host of mythological characters such as Maenads (female followers of Dionysus), satyrs, Hermes, Pan, lions and tigers. “This is the very first time we find the Dionysus and Hercules wine competition scene on a burial coffin in our region,” says Nohar Shahar.
