Miten kerron lapselleni läheisen päihdeongelmasta? Lapsille on tärkeää puhua päihdeasioista ikätasoisesti eli siten että lapsi ymmärtää sanat ja käsitteet, joita käytät. Asialla ei kannata pelotella ja kannattaakin odottaa hetkeä, jolloin itsellä on rauhallinen olo, jotta aiheesta voi puhua mahdollisimman neutraalisti. Leikki-ikäiselle voit kertoa, että läheisellä on sairaus, joka vaikuttaa ihmiseen siten, että hän ei esimerkiksi voi nähdä lasta usein. Isommalle lapselle voit jo kertoa, että sairaus johtuu päihteiden tai esimerkiksi alkoholin käytöstä. Voit kertoa, miten päihteiden käyttö vaikuttaa ihmisen käyttäytymiseen. Lapselle on tärkeää kertoa, että hänellä on muita läheisiä hänen tukenaan, joihin hän voi turvautua. Lapsen pitää tietää olevansa rakastettu ja arvostettu sellaisena kuin hän on. Hänelle kannattaa selittää, ettei läheinen toimi tahallaan, kun esimerkiksi ei muista tai voi tulla käymään lapsen luona. Voitte myös yhdessä pohtia, miten halutessanne pidätte yhteyttä sairastuneeseen läheiseen ja minkälaisilla säännöillä se voisi onnistua.
