Last week marked a significant occasion for local artist Emmanuel Preston, a long-time member of the Walnut Street Center community. Manny was invited to the Massachusetts State House where he received dual citations from both the House of Representatives and the Senate, recognizing his exceptional contributions to the arts. For several years, Manny has diligently cultivated his artistic talents within the WSC community, excelling in drawing, painting, and the creation of unique tote bags. His dedication and creative vision have resonated with a wide audience, as a significant portion of his artwork has been successfully sold to enthusiastic buyers from across the region and beyond. Manny's artistic inspiration draws deeply from his religious views, encompassing the themes of his musical taste, the narratives of his favorite movies, and the beauty of his everyday environment. This diverse range of influences is evident in the vibrant and engaging nature of his creations. The citations from the Massachusetts government serve as a testament to Manny's hard work, artistic growth, and the positive impact his talent has had on the community. This recognition at the State House underscores the value and importance of artistic expression and the remarkable achievements of individuals within local arts programs. For the third year running, BTAN is proud to bring back our signature event, Creative Black Futures! We are seeking youth artists 13-24 of ALL DISCIPLINES interested in developing and sharing their craft in a big way. Creative Black Futures is a multidisciplinary youth arts exhibition and showcase designed to highlight and celebrate the amazing talent of Black-Africana, youth in Allegheny County. Last year’s event saw youth representing 16 schools across 5 boroughs and 10 neighborhoods, bringing the creative energy through vocal, literary, visual and performance art! This year will be even bigger with our amazing Creatives in Residence engaging young performers in a multi week artist development workshop series where they will continue to sharpen their skills leading up to the main event. This event is always a labor of love and is rewarding for everyone involved. We need your help make sure talented youth from all over the County connect to this opportunity to get paid, get some creative development, and most importantly, share their gifts and talents with the community.
