Nations Trust WNPS Monthly Lecture
Building a Thousand Species refuge
WNPS PLANT’s groundbreaking effort to save our diversity
By Sriyan de Silva Wijeyeratne
JANUARY 16TH 6 PM, AT JASMINE HALL, BMICH
Pioneering Private Conservation in Sri Lanka WNPS PLANT protects over 1,000 species across nearly 30 locations in the biodiversity-rich southwestern regions.
With Sri Lanka's forest cover rapidly declining, conserving both State and private forest patches is critical to safeguard endemic and endangered species. The southwestern region, home to 50% of the population and most endemics, faces severe threats from urbanization, agricultural expansion, and poorly planned development.
What is WNPS PLANT? How did it begin, and what challenges does it face? Is this a sustainable solution or a temporary phenomenon? What insights have been gained about conservation, and what lies ahead for this ambitious initiative?
Join us to explore these questions and gain a deeper understanding of innovative approaches to conservation amidst a backdrop of deforestation, habitat fragmentation, and species extinction. This event is ideal for conservationists, students, scientists, nature lovers, and policymakers seeking to make a difference.
The lecture would be presented by Sriyan de Silva Wijeyeratne Chairman of PLANT and a recent Past President of WNPS, Sriyan spearheaded a transformative renaissance of the society. He conceptualized PLANT, Emerald Trails, and Sri Lanka Leopard Day and serves as Editor of the Loris Journal. A published photographer and Business Transformation Practitioner, he has held multiple leadership roles, blending his passion for conservation, music, and the outdoors. Sriyan has served on several boards and contributed to local and global charities.
Discover how innovative strategies and urgent action are reshaping the future of Sri Lanka's endemic wildlife and ecosystems
The monthly lecture of the WNPS is supported by Nations Trust Bank, it is open to both members and non-members, with free entrance
