Modern significance
July 5th is Iwo Jima Day at the National Museum of Military Vehicles!
The National Museum of Military Vehicles will host Shayne Jarosz, Executive Director of the Iwo Jima Association, for a special two-hour presentation on July 5, 2025, beginning at 2:00 p.m. His presentation, titled “Iwo Jima, Past, Present, and Future: Why This Iconic Battle Still Matters to the United States,” will explore the significance of the Battle of Iwo Jima, the island’s place in modern history, its return to Japanese control, and what is happening there today.
The Battle of Iwo Jima and the famous flag-raising on Mount Suribachi are deeply embedded in both Marine Corps tradition and American national identity. The July 4th weekend offers a fitting opportunity to reflect on this powerful chapter in the history of American freedom.
This event is included with regular museum admission or free for annual members. A lunch buffet will be available for an additional fee, and no reservations are required. Visit

Powerful shelter
Friedrich Born – The Man Who Defied Indifference
During the Nazi occupation of Hungary, Friedrich Born—delegate of the International Red Cross in Budapest—chose action over silence.
Appointed in 1944, Born quickly realized the fate awaiting Hungarian Jews. Inspired by Carl Lutz’s strategies, he hired up to 3,000 Jews as employees of the Red Cross to provide them protection and designated multiple buildings in the city as Red Cross safe houses.
Most remarkably, he managed to distribute around 15,000 Schutzbriefe—protection documents issued by the Red Cross—saving thousands from deportation and death.
He also played a key role in securing the ancient Pannonhalma Monastery as a neutral shelter for refugees, including many Jewish children, after reaching an agreement with both the Hungarian government and German military.
His efforts are credited with saving between 11,000 and 15,000 Jews during just a few months in 1944–1945.
Like many other rescuers, Born returned to civilian life after the war, never speaking publicly of his actions. Only in 1987, 24 years after his passing, was he recognized as Righteous Among the Nations by Yad Vashem.
Born’s legacy is a powerful reminder: even in the darkest times, one individual—with courage and conviction—can save an entire world.
May his memory be blessed.

Remarkable late
The artifact before you is none other than the famous Musicians Stand >>>
This rare and remarkable cultic stand, uncovered in Ashdod, is a hallmark of Philistine culture, dating back to the Iron Age—specifically, the late 11th to early 10th century BCE.
Archaeological evidence from the Philistine period reveals that they preserved a distinct ethnic identity. Music, it seems, played a central role in their ritual practices—just as it did throughout the ancient Near East, including in biblical tradition.
The stand was found in an open area, not within a temple, resting above the destruction layer of Philistine Ashdod, alongside other ritual artifacts. Likely used for libations or offerings, it belongs to a unique group of Iron Age cult stands adorned with human and animal figures.
What makes this stand truly exceptional is the ensemble of five finely detailed musicians carved into its surface: Two playing a double flute, a drummer, a lyrist and a cymbal player. Above the musicians a procession of three animals is depicted.
Their presence may reflect the deep role of music in Philistine worship—or perhaps the stand represents a “model temple,” with musicians positioned in its doorway or window, taking part in a sacred scene.

Maritime Museum of San Diego is excited to host the Western Flyer, the same fishing vessel Steinbeck used for his 1940 Sea of Cortez expedition this Spring! For one day only, Wednesday, March 26, 2025, 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. visitors will have the rare opportunity to step aboard the 77-foot sardine seiner as part of the Museum’s general admission experience, exploring its rich history and enduring legacy. This 2025 voyage marks the 85th anniversary of Steinbeck and Ricketts’ groundbreaking journey, which shaped modern ecological thinking and conservation efforts.
Published in 1941, Sea of Cortez: A Leisurely Journal of Travel and Research chronicled the historic voyage, leaving a profound impact on both the scientific and literary worlds. The book was among the first public calls for conservation in the region and played a key role in raising awareness about the ecological significance of the Gulf of California. Over the decades, it has inspired countless students to pursue careers in marine and field biology. While the book endured, the boat itself disappeared into obscurity for decades. She reappeared 20 years ago, but then sank twice, and was given up for dead, destined to be chain sawed into a tourist attraction in Salinas, CA. However, thanks to the efforts of the Western Flyer Foundation, the boat has undergone a meticulous restoration.

Unique retired
The National Museum of the Mighty Eighth Air Force’s Author Talk series proudly presents Bob Sheppard, sharing the powerful story of his father, MSgt. James Sheppard, and his service with the Tuskegee Airmen during World War II. Join us Wednesday, March 26, at 11:00 a.m. at the museum for this inspiring presentation.
This program is free to the public, but registration is requested
https://forms.gle/ChW2HSVa5cuXMQ3Q8
About the Talk
Growing up in the 1960s and '70s, Bob Sheppard and his siblings had no idea that their father, MSgt. James Sheppard, had served in an all-Black segregated unit of the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II. It wasn’t until later in life that Bob had the opportunity to accompany his father to air shows, speaking engagements, and special events, meeting the legendary Tuskegee Airmen and learning firsthand about their courage, resilience, and service.
After his father was no longer able to travel, Bob stepped in to carry forward his story. Since MSgt. Sheppard’s passing in 2018, Bob traveled the country, sharing his father’s experiences and the lasting legacy of the famed 332nd Fighter Group.
Now, audiences will have the unique opportunity to hear Bob Sheppard’s compelling presentation, where he will share a deeply personal account of hardship, determination, and triumph. His talk will include a segment from a documentary he co-produced, offering a powerful glimpse into his father’s journey—from training in Alabama and Michigan to serving in Italy at the height of WWII.
About the Speaker
A veteran of the broadcasting, financial services, and corporate sustainability industries, Bob Sheppard retired after leading sales and marketing efforts for a U.S. firm specializing in commercial and industrial drones. His passion for history and storytelling now fuels his mission to ensure that the legacy of the Tuskegee Airmen continues to inspire future generations.

Natural west
Please join the Palm Beach Museum of Natural History in celebration of Florida Archaeology Month!
Featuring Best Selling Author Robert Jacob.
Florida has a long and rich history of pirates plundering its shores, cities, and shipping lanes from Key West to Pensacola and from Miami to Jacksonville. But how much of it is true? Exaggerations of true pirate histories have been told and retold for centuries, giving rise to imaginary pirate heroes, and spawning sensational legends and myths. This course examines the truths, myths, and legends about Florida Pirates from Sir Francis Drake to José Gaspar.
This in-person presentation will include a display of replicas and actual artifacts, a one-hour lecture, and a book signing. Visit the author's website at
https://www.robertjacobauthor.com/
There will be an additional event specifically for children at 11:30 am on Monday, March 24th in partnership with the Wellington Mall's Kid's Club.
