*Help save the Willow Grove Post Office! Sign my petition!* Thanks to local residents Peter, David and Matthew for raising this with me at my listening post yesterday. The Willow Grove Licenced Post Office serviced the growing town of Willow Grove, in addition to Fumina, Fumina South and Hill End. For the first time since the late 1880s, the town no longer has a post office. Following the closure of the Willow Grove Licenced Post Office in September 2024, the township of Willow Grove and the much broader extended communities inclusive of Tanjil South, Willow Grove, Hill End, Fumina and Fumina South have been waiting for Australia Post to re-open the LPO at an alternate location (which was the initial indication and intention given by Australia Post in September 2024). On January 8th, 2025 Australia Post made the decision to not re-open the Willow Grove LPO. Residents have been informed that they will be given access to “community mailboxes”. These mailboxes do not offer the following services and functions of the previous LPO: •⁠ ⁠Mail acceptance and processing •⁠ ⁠Parcel delivery, acceptance and processing •⁠ ⁠Postage stamps •⁠ ⁠Money orders •⁠ ⁠Bill payment and banking •⁠ ⁠Document certification •⁠ ⁠Identity services Residents are now expected to travel to Moe or Trafalgar for the nearest post office. For residents of Fumina South, this means a return trip of over an hour’s drive. For older residents, residents with a disability or with carer responsibilities, or those on a low income, it may not be feasible to drive several times a week to towns nearly 20 kilometres away. The Petition calls on the Minister for Communications to direct Australia Post to properly explore all options to re-open the post office, including engaging with other businesses in the town (the pub is set to re-open shortly) on whether they would be interested in taking on the licence.
