The myth says this was to save her, but Pan broke the reed into pieces and made his flute. “her body” is a call for the reeds to become bones again and our breaths will persist until she takes back her body. ... The performance’s music is original, primarily based on the use of diverse and heterogeneous wind instruments, alongside vocal beatbox and overtone singing techniques, presented both individually and in combination through the various instruments. The corporealities and choreographic material of the performance draw inspiration from the myth of Pan and Syrinx, as well as from the Mexican myth of La Loba. From running Toronto’s Chemical Recording Studio for the first part of the new millenium, to his return to Winnipeg and fifteen fallow years as a father and carpenter before the enforced isolation of the pandemic lockdown sparked his powerful return to words and music and the discovery of his true, singular voice. His poetry is dense and highly musical, hypnotically rhythmic and rhyming. He works strictly from memory and improvisation, performing alone as poet, accompanied by a piano player or live bass and drums, with a jazz quartet, or a full guitar-driven band. Travelling far beyond personal allegory and the requisite honesty, One sets off in search of universal truths. Rarely abstract but still full of space to inhabit, his work teems with memorable lines and phrases, a dizzying stack of nesting dolls to unpack. Alternating between gravity and buoyancy, tragedy and joy, the invisible forces that shape our human journeys, life's struggle is made tangible and beautiful.
