Say 'HI' to our newest ambassador, 3-year-old Sam! 👋 Super Sam has been bravely fighting high-risk B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia since his diagnosis last May. 💔 The “high-risk” classification has meant that Sam’s case has required more intensive treatment. And his treatment journey has not been without bumps in the road… Early on, during the induction phase of chemotherapy, he developed a staph infection following surgery to insert a port. Multiple follow-up surgeries were required to remove the initial port and insert a PICC line, and then to place another port later on. Then, after tolerating chemotherapy and immunotherapy well for a period, the first interim maintenance phase of treatment brought new challenges. It was extremely tough on Sam’s little body. Thankfully, he has now progressed to the second interim maintenance phase. ✊ Advanced genetic testing has also led to an unexpected second diagnosis of Noonan syndrome, a genetic disorder that can affect growth, facial features, heart function, and development. This development is helping Sam’s care team better monitor his ongoing response to treatment and catch potential complications early on. Sam has taken everything in his stride and shown incredible bravery, as well as cheering everyone up with his trademark humour and goofiness. His parents describe him as “full of personality.” His dress up costumes of choice are ‘ninja’ or Darth Vader, he insists on wearing his favourite yellow rain boots regardless of the weather, and he’s obsessed with sauteed mushrooms. 😄 He’s now a familiar face in the oncology ward at SickKids, always announcing his arrival with a cheerful “I’m baaack!” to brighten everyone’s day. 🥰 GCC’ers, let’s give a warm welcome to Super Sam! 🧡
