📢 [PRESS RELEASE] Government of National Unity: Young children are non-negotiable The single biggest investment in early childhood development (ECD) in South Africa's history was going to be tabled in Parliament of the Republic of South Africa in the #2025budget speech yesterday, but in a dramatic turn of events, the budget speech was postponed until 12 March. Now, this much-needed funding for our sector is under threat! We need all hands on deck to ensure that National Treasury: 💰Follows through with its proposed injection of R10 billion into the ECD subsidy, increasing it from R17 to R24 per child per day, and R210 million into ECD infrastructure and registration support. 🍏Follows through with the increase in funding for the DBE’s early nutrition pilot, from R197 million in 2024/25 to R336 million in 2025/26. 👶🏼Follows through with plans to increase the child support grant from R530 to R580 per month from 01 April 2025, and commit to further increases to ensure parity with the food poverty line, currently R798 per month. ✊Ensures that revenue and spending proposals do not further burden low-income households. 🤱Supports the implementation of a double-discounted list of 10 budget-friendly food items to promote maternal and child nutrition.
