Love you DAD, thanks for pushing me, when I couldn't push myself. Thanks for believing in me when I could not,
Most importantly, Thank you for telling me. "It is better to be fishing and thinking of God, than in church, thinking of fishing'
Richard Allen Sherwood (October 12th,1934 ~ December 29th, 2024) passed away peacefully at the age of 90. A life-long resident of his beloved city of St. Paul. He was preceded in death by his father; George, mother; Doris, brother; George “Jerry”, and niece Michelle.
He is survived by brother; Donald of MN, children; Vickey (Steve) of OH, son Mark (Jennifer) of MN and son Michael (Rachelle) of GA; grandchildren; Dalton (Miller), Eliot, Grant (Kieya), nephews; George and Scott and niece; Kim (Tad).
Richard left High School to honorably serve his country in The United States Marine Corps, during the Korean War. After his four years of service ended, he returned to Minnesota, using the GI Bill to attend the University of Minnesota, graduating with a BA in history. He eventually settled in St. Paul, living over 50 years in the same home in the Macalester/Groveland area.
A fighter for social justice, he spent his entire career as a Social Worker, spending 27 years with Hennepin County. He was a union supporter, organizer and was a proud member of AFSCME. During his career he devoted a significant amount of his career assisting families, immigrants and those making new beginnings in their lives. Over the years Richard hosted several foster children. He was involved in politics and supported many campaigns during his lifetime.
Coming of age during WWII, the experience ignited his love of US military history, a life-long passion. He had an extensive collection of military memorabilia, much coming from numerous trips to Europe and Russia. He gave presentations at the VFW and was considered by some to be an expert on WWII history. He also had a deep interest in Genealogy and was very proud of his Swedish roots, eventually tracing his family history to Sweden and visiting several times, meeting his extended family. He contributed articles for the Minnesota Historical Society covering Swede Hollow. He travelled throughout his life visiting China, Russia, Europe, Southeast Asian and of course throughout the United States. He particularly loved our national parks and the American west.
He spent much of his life outdoors and had a love of water, a deep appreciation and respect for nature, spending many years boating, fishing and camping, with the St. Croix and Mississippi Rivers his favorites. A life-long gardener, his yard was once featured on the front page of the Variety section of the Minneapolis Star Tribune. Not an inch of his yard was devoted to grass, but he always had room for another plant. His neighbors and local children enjoyed the many different plants and trees, stopping to admire and have a chat. His passion for gardening and camping was passed down to all his children, as well as many lessons along the way. Including being taught from an early age, our first job was to clean the beach from previous campers and look for firewood before the tents went up.
We would be remiss in not mentioning his legendary Christmas trees and beloved tree village that inspired wonder in his children’s eyes. We all will miss his love to entertain and the many seasonal parties over the years.
Never a stranger to anyone, he was a colorful character and will be remembered by so many. There will never be another like him. We love you.
We want to express our deep gratitude and appreciation for the tremendous care and unwavering years of support of the Minneapolis VA Medical Center and homecare team.
After a private ceremony Richard will be interred at Union Cemetery, Maplewood, MN.
