Mexican Immigration: Past and Present
The Jacques Marchais Museum of Tibetan Art is pleased to invite you to a special event on April 27, as part of the Voices of Diaspora Program, a yearlong initiative that will conclude in May 2025. This program explores the rich cultural heritages of communities that have experienced diaspora, both past and present.

Irma Bohorquez-Geisler, D.Phil. Is a photographer, educator, biologist, teaching artist, professor, printmaker, and since 1992, the Founder, Artistic, and Program Director of the annual NYC Day of the Dead Festival (Día de Muertos) on Staten Island. Honored with a Proclamation from the City of New York for her work on “Staten Island Women Who Preserve History”, her talk will focus on the cultural heritage of Mexican Americans, the immigrant experience of prior generations, and the challenges facing Mexican people more recently coming to America.
Irma Bohórquez-Geisler holds a doctorate in Ecological Entomology from Oxford University; and a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Autonomous University of Mexico City (UNAM), from which she received a full scholarship to pursue her doctoral degree at Oxford. Dr. Bohórquez-Geisler's contributions have earned numerous accolades over the years. As a photographer, she has exhibited in numerous museums and contemporary galleries, as well as internationally in Berlin, Spain, and Mexico. Awarded the Gabriela Mistral, Julia de Burgos, Frida Kahlo Award, a tribute to her role as both a photographer and a cultural leader who preserves and promotes Mexican values and cultural heritage for younger generations in New York.
