HANDY-CAPS for a Day: Stepping into Different Shoes at School
Our upper primary students recently took part in W.I.S.E.S. (Walk In Someone Else’s Shoes)—an engaging activity designed to foster empathy by helping students understand and appreciate the roles and challenges of both school staff and individuals with disabilities.
Each year level took on tasks typically performed by different members of our school team. To deepen the experience, students were also asked to complete their responsibilities while staying silent or using only one arm, simulating the daily challenges faced by people with disabilities.
At the end of the activity, the students reflected on what they had experienced. Many shared how eye-opening it was to realize the effort involved in roles they had never thought much about before. Some commented on the surprising difficulty of performing even simple tasks with physical limitations. Others expressed a newfound respect for teachers, staff and maintenance team.
This activity was a meaningful and memorable experience that helped students grow in empathy, teamwork, and resilience.
