Transparent surroundings

The Hungarian House of Music (Magyar Zene Háza), is a cultural venue located in Budapest's Városliget Park. It aims to celebrate music through interactive exhibitions, concerts, and educational programs. The striking structure was designed by Japanese architect Sou Fujimoto, who skillfully combines innovative architecture with the natural surroundings.
The House of Music, completed as the first development within the Liget Budapest Project, stands as Central Europe's most significant initiative for cultural urban renewal. It represents Hungary's most ambitious cultural undertaking since 1896, when Városliget was transformed in celebration of the millennium of the Hungarian state. The venue officially opened to the public in early 2022.
Chosen from over 150 submissions in an international competition, Fujimoto's design harmoniously blends with its surroundings. The building features a curved golden roof with irregularly shaped openings, supported by slender, tree-like columns and surrounded by transparent glass walls, creating an airy, organic atmosphere. The design has been whimsically compared to a slice of cheese, a pancake, or a mushroom, with its 80-meter diameter enhancing the natural landscape.
A standout aspect of the interior is the ceiling, which is decorated with 30,000 golden leaves. This design element pays homage to the Jugendstil aesthetic present in the Concert Hall of the Ferenc Liszt Academy. While Fujimoto is celebrated for his minimalist designs that primarily feature white structures, the incorporation of gold in this space reflects the artistic traditions of Hungary.
The House of Music spans 1,000 square meters, featuring dedicated spaces for different aspects of music. The underground level houses a music museum with the interactive exhibition "Dimensions of Sound," highlighting key moments in European and modern music history. A highlight is the "Sound Dome," which offers a 360-degree immersive experience with 30 speakers and eight projectors. The ground floor features two concert halls with capacities of 300 and 100 guests, hosting classical, folk, and jazz performances. The upper level includes classrooms, and a library focused on music research and education.
Combining modern design, interactive storytelling, and live performances, the House of Music has become a prominent cultural destination in Budapest, celebrating Hungary's rich musical heritage.
