During our rites of passage, we are highly tuned in to how people behave towards us and our new status. Ideally, wise mentors and initiated women would welcome the girl into the women’s circle and teach her the many mysteries and powers associated with the change. This would ensure a happy transition, with the young woman delighting in what her body can now do. The fact that none of this happens, does not mean the girl is not being initiated. She is introduced to a world where her generative powers are misunderstood, often shamed, her creativity only valuable if it can make money; her intuition seen with suspicion, and very little information on how to manage her new body – which is increasingly being scrutinized for anything that doesn’t also fit into a very narrow mold of acceptability.
