It’s not pathology. Resist the urge to pathologize! (Can we say that any louder?!) You know what else? Kids are NOT born resilient. If anyone tells you that, look ‘em right in the eye and tell them it’s not true. If we want to help kids cultivate resilience, we have to start by helping them feel safe. Really safe — from the top of their heads to the tips of their toes. Their hearts and minds need to know they’re safe. And right now? That’s harder than ever. We’re living in a moment where safety is being stripped from classrooms, from identities, from communities. And kids feel it. Especially those navigating complex trauma and toxic stress.
