It evokes YHVH, the specific proper name of Israel’s God, known as the Tetragrammoton , “the four consonants”. The phrase also indicates that the earliest recorded understanding of the divine name was a verb derived from stem meaning “to be” (יהוה). Because it is the sound of wind and breath, the way in which we sense the invisible, it could express the quality of absolute Being, the eternal, unchanging dynamic, Presence. The phrase defies simple translation. It has been taken to mean “I am whatever I choose to be.” “I am pure being”.
