From insulation tiles to custom packaging and fashion applications, mycelium is taking root in the future of design. 🌱♻️ RMIT alum Amanda Morgan is on a mission to replace plastic with mycelium, the root structure of fungi, through her award-winning startup, Fungi Solutions. 🍄💡 Inspired by microbiologist Tradd Cotter and fuelled by the sustainability focus of her Bachelor of Fashion (Design) degree, Amanda is now growing compostable alternatives to packaging and even leather-style materials from mushrooms. “Sustainability is now a fundamental part of every industry in the sense that we don't have the option to not be sustainable. In fact, the step beyond that is to be regenerative or feeding back into the systems that feed us. And I think fungi are quite inspirational for that.” Now completing her Master of Technology (Fashion and Textiles) at RMIT and lecturing part-time, Amanda and her team are scaling up to meet the booming demand for mushroom-based materials.
