Every year, thousands of Australians hear the life-changing words, "You have cancer." For Emma Baker APAM, the reality hit close to home in 2008 when her mum was diagnosed with early breast cancer - a moment that made regular screenings a personal priority.
Fast forward to January 2021: Emma, then 41, went for her first mammogram and ultrasound, fully expecting a clean bill of health. The mammogram was clear, but the ultrasound revealed something suspicious. A biopsy soon followed.
Days later, Emma’s GP delivered unsettling news and referred her to a breast surgeon.
The diagnosis?
Stage 1, grade 3, hormone receptor-positive, HER2-positive invasive ductal carcinoma.
Given the aggressive nature of the cancer, Emma embarked on a year-long journey of surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and targeted therapy—a powerful reminder of the importance of early detection and resilience in the face of adversity.
