💡What if the jackfruit seed you tossed away could one day replace plastic?
At NIT Rourkela, a team led by Dr. Preetam Sarkar from the Dept. of Food Process Engineering is doing just that!
While looking for a biodegradable alternative, the team stumbled upon something most of us throw away without a second thought — fruit seeds.
Using discarded seeds of fruits like mango, jackfruit, jamun, and watermelon, they’ve developed biodegradable, edible films that can decompose in just 60 days.
What's even more impressive?
➡️They’re 100% natural
➡️Made from agricultural and kitchen waste
➡️Safe enough to eat
To boost their protective power, the team infused them with zinc oxide, chitosan, and lignin nanoparticles, making them strong enough to block harmful microbes like E. coli and Bacillus cereus.
The result? Tomatoes wrapped in these films stayed fresh for 15 extra days!
With India generating over 3.5 million tonnes of plastic waste each year, innovations like these could lead the way to a greener, cleaner future.
