This nationwide observance honors the invaluable contributions of Filipino artists and cultural workers while celebrating the uniqueness and diversity of the country’s artistic heritage. Our Constitution affirms the significance of the arts, mandating the State to conserve, promote, and popularize the nation’s historical and cultural heritage, resources, and artistic creations (Article XIV, Section 15). This commitment underscores the importance of preserving the artistic traditions that embody the Filipino identity. 𝑨𝒏𝒊 𝒏𝒈 𝑺𝒊𝒏𝒊𝒏𝒈, 𝑫𝒊𝒘𝒂, 𝒂𝒕 𝑫𝒂𝒎𝒅𝒂𝒎𝒊𝒏: 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑺𝒑𝒊𝒓𝒊𝒕 𝒐𝒇 𝑭𝒊𝒍𝒊𝒑𝒊𝒏𝒐 𝑨𝒓𝒕 This year’s National Arts Month carries the theme "Ani ng Sining, Diwa at Damdamin", which highlights the profound connection between art and the Filipino spirit—where creativity springs from the very soul and passion of the Filipino people. From the Spoliarium by Juan Luna to the intricate T’nalak weavings of the T’boli people, from the sacred chants of the Pasyon to the enduring legacy of Apo Whang-Od’s Kalinga tattoos, Filipino artistry has long been a reflection of the nation’s struggles, triumphs, and aspirations. 𝑬𝒎𝒑𝒐𝒘𝒆𝒓𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝑪𝒂𝒈𝒂𝒚𝒂𝒏 𝒅𝒆 𝑶𝒓𝒐’𝒔 𝑪𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒗𝒆 𝑺𝒆𝒄𝒕𝒐𝒓 𝑻𝒉𝒓𝒐𝒖𝒈𝒉 𝑳𝒆𝒈𝒊𝒔𝒍𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 In Cagayan de Oro, Vice Mayor Bebot Rodriguez stands as a pillar of support for local arts and culture, championing initiatives that empower Kagay-anon artists and provide platforms for creative expression by spearheading several legislative proposals aimed at institutionalizing artistic development. The lady vice mayor has proposed the Original Kagay-an Music (OKM) Ordinance, which seeks to promote local music by ensuring the airplay of Kagay-anon songs on radio stations and by supporting artists through various broadcast initiatives. Additionally, Vice Mayor Bebot has likewise proposed the establishment of the Tsada Oro Film Academy (TOFA) and the Tsada Oro Film Festival (TOFF) to transform the city into a central hub for homegrown filmmakers, enabling local talents to tell stories about the city’s people, culture, and history. Imagine a city where original Kagay-anon songs dominate the airwaves and locally produced films bring the region’s stories to the national stage—what a remarkable boost for our local artists and creatives. Further cementing her commitment to local arts, VM Bebot has also proposed the creation of the Cagayan de Oro Culture and Arts Council. This initiative envisions an annual Creative Month Festival and the establishment of incubator spaces for startups in the creative industry—providing aspiring artists and entrepreneurs with opportunities to hone their craft and bring their visions to life. 𝑨 𝑻𝒉𝒓𝒊𝒗𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝑪𝒖𝒍𝒕𝒖𝒓𝒂𝒍 𝑳𝒂𝒏𝒅𝒔𝒄𝒂𝒑𝒆: 𝑷𝒓𝒐𝒈𝒓𝒂𝒎𝒔 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑪𝒐𝒎𝒎𝒖𝒏𝒊𝒕𝒚 𝑬𝒏𝒈𝒂𝒈𝒆𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒕 While these legislative measures are currently under review, Vice Mayor Rodriguez has proactively initiated numerous activities to celebrate and elevate local artistry. Among these are the Higaonon Arts Workshop—an initiative that highlights the rich cultural heritage of the Higaonon people—and the Kanta ta Bai Songwriting Competition, where participants compose original songs that honor the beauty of the city. The Kanta ta Bai Season 2: Inter-barangay Vocal Solo Competition and Sayaw ta Bai Cdeo Dance Festival also continue to engage the local community in creative expressions through music and dance. Furthermore, Vice Mayor Bebot has extended her support to landmark cultural events such as Strike a Pose: Tela Mindanao Fashion Show, which highlights the intricate and vibrant textiles of Mindanao; KUMBIRA 2024, an annual culinary festival showcasing the city’s gastronomic excellence; and Cagayan de Misamis Entablado Inc.’s participation in the 41st Voiron Chartreuse World Cultures Festival in Campan, France, bringing Kagay-anon talent to the global stage.
