This screening is in partnership with the University of Pennsylvania’s Department of Francophone, Italian, and Germanic Studies. "Abandoning the Plantations where they work, Hermansia and Tiquataque, a pair of lovers and musicians, leave the plantation behind along with its history, its backbreaking work, its reinvention of slavery and move to the city of Saint-Pierre in the northwest of Martinique. Biguine, the movie screened in French and Creole with English subtitles, follows the musical genre and popular dance style that emerged at the end of the 19th century from the French Caribbean island of Martinique. The term is romantic and enchanting in nature and it gained popularity in the United States and Europe during the 1930s and 1940s, partly due to its incorporation into jazz and big band music. Biguine, both as a music and a dance, played a major role in giving Caribbean artists a sense of pride in their culture in the wake of the abolition of slavery and introducing Caribbean Rhythms to a broader audience."
