Robert Reich: We are watching what we never thought possible—the apparent transformation of our democracy into a dictatorship (or, as Donald Trump has promoted, a monarchy with him as king). You may be feeling helpless, powerless, and alone. But you are not. Most Americans are as disgusted by this as you are. Trump and his billionaire friends want us to feel helpless, powerless, and alone—because that's how Trump will take over. But tyranny cannot prevail over people who refuse to succumb to it. And something is beginning to happen. We've already seen what's possible when we organize. Boycotts are taking hold. Protests are on the rise. When Trump attempted to end birthright citizenship, the courts blocked him. When Harvard refused to follow the White House’s demand to eliminate DEI programs, Trump backed down and claimed the demands were a “mistake.” And remember, during his first term, MoveOn helped lead the movement that saved the Affordable Care Act and forced Trump to end family separation at the border. Authoritarians throughout history have understood that their greatest enemy is an organized citizenry. I've seen the power of organized resistance before. More than 55 years ago, I participated in the movement against the Vietnam War—a movement that ultimately ended the war and caused a once-powerful president to resign. Today, we will prevail because we are relearning that same basic truth: We are the leaders we've been waiting for. Ultimately, what happens to our country will come down to our own courage and resolve: To engage in peaceful protest. To organize and mobilize others. To work against hate and bigotry.
