I pray Yah gives me the right words to deliver this message. For those who don’t know me, I’m Rio, and I’ve been breeding American Bullies for more than 15 years now. I’ve met a ton of people and put hands on a ton of dogs. Because of this, I’ve learned a LOT of things, and I still learn new things every year. One of the things I’ve just learned this year is that we spend so much time choosing sides in the bully community based on the health of the dogs— American Bully vs. Exotic Bully…. Registry vs Registry, social group vs social group, popular dog vs popular dog— that we don’t realize that the health of our relationships with the PEOPLE are more important. Dont get me wrong, the health of the dogs is IMPORTANT, but these dogs pass away all the time, healthy or not. We’ve lost so many legends in my time breeding, but many of the people I’ve known are still here. Some who I’ve rubbed the wrong way just being young and inconsiderate and on the wrong side of the fence at the time. The older I got I realized a lot of these people were and still are good people, and I didnt see it because I didnt look past their choice of dog and see them for who they are and what they are worth. Thankfully with age, I’ve realized it’s more important to ask someone how they are doing, how they have been and how can I help, than it is to tell them their dogs aren’t healthy or don’t fit a “standard”. Can you imagine how many REALLY GOOD PEOPLE you may not get to meet or work with because you judged them by their dog? I guess if I could say anything to new breeders it would be, don’t choose a side based on the dogs, choose a side based on the PEOPLE… make sure they are good people that are trying to move in a positive direction and plant positive seeds within the community. Relationships last longer than our dogs do. If you really love the breed, build relationships regardless of the choice of dogs, groups or registries. Like-minded people make way more happen together than apart, and the dogs alone can’t push the breed forward. It will take US PEOPLE…. TOGETHER to move the needle.
