New Year’s Day is a ripe time to reset - and that reset always starts with listening. When we want a fresh start, we usually start listening to someone or some platform that promises some sort of change in return for the investment of our time. Sometimes we listen to the commercials that market gym memberships. Sometimes we listen to influencers that market how to get ourselves properly organized. And sometimes, we start year-long endeavors that plan out how to pray, read our Bibles, or do devotions on a consistent basis. These plans and program partnerships in and of themselves, are not bad. Many of them can be good for us if we are able to stick with it for the long haul - but in the end, they are what they are. They are limited and many times one-dimensional. A true reset, and the only fresh start that can promise fulfillment, is a partnership where we pair our hearts with God and listen attentively to His leading. Henri Nouwen said, “Prayer is first of all listening to God. It’s openness. God is always speaking; he’s always doing something. Prayer is to enter into that activity… Convert your thoughts into prayer. As we are involved in unceasing thinking, so we are called to unceasing prayer.
