"Wilbur" 30" x 30" Work in Progress. ------------------ Hello friends. I’ve had a really full and jammed pack life as of late. Besides training our new puppy, I’ve been doing a lot of work travel. I’ve been down in South Florida for a few weeks for the typical engagements with galleries, collectors, delivering final paintings and making time to be inspired. I have a slew of wonderful floral & tropical paintings started— inspired by how lush and beautiful the landscape is here. Those will be shared in the coming weeks. Back at home, several intuitive abstracts are in various stages of completion. Like many of you other artist know, it’s best to work on several pieces at the same time—- for me— it helps combat the middle stages of painting— when the initial excitement and potential is gone and you’re staring at what you believe is an ugly, unsavable mess— with all faith lost in your talent, your tract record & training. (Have you been there too?) On a different note, I want you to meet this cutie, Wilbur. The current painting of Wilbur (not shown) is nearly finished and looks like the expected and intentionally beautifully crafted piece of fine art that was commissioned. For the more traditional oil painted portraits I do, I love using wax and glazes— so not only is the subject matter well executed, but there is added beauty and visual interest in the process of painting—-the sketching, the underpainting, the layers of glazes, wax, tool textures and varnishes. This is Wilbur’s initial underpainting. Although its just the start, I think there is something magically beautifully about it's raw energy and freshness. I sometimes think raw and authentic is so much more powerful than hours of overworking.
