All I need to learn about legacy can be taught at Walmart.
On Jan 2, 2024 my brother Aaron passed away.
He was born with special needs. He never never learned to write cursive and could barely print his name. His math abilities were on a first grade level.
The night before his funeral we had a viewing. I didn’t expect many people to attend. After all Aaron didn’t know many people and he wasn’t a prominent figure in the community.
And as I greeted each person in line, I would ask them how they knew Aaron. Some participated with him in Special Olympics. Others went to the same church as Aaron.
Then, in the line was an older lady, short, skinny, and frail.
She stepped up and as I thanked her for coming, she said.
“Aaron came to Walmart every Friday to grocery shop with his caretaker. I was always the cashier who waited on Aaron. He was so kind to me.”
And in that moment, it felt as if I had dropped to my knees.
Some may define legacy as what you have accomplished, awards & achievements.
But if you go to the Walmart where Aaron shopped,
I know a cashier who will teach you a different definition.
I used to think it would be an honor to have the State Governor attend my funeral.
Now I hope a Walmart cashier attends.
What has life taught you about legacy?
