How teamwork and patience helped sweet Stella overcome her cruel past 🧡 In October 2024, Stella, a 2-year-old pit bull-mix, arrived at the ASPCA Animal Hospital, limping on both hind legs. She had been abandoned at the NYPD 100th Precinct stationhouse in Queens two days before and was transferred to the ASPCA as part of our partnership with the NYPD. X-rays revealed multiple old fractures all over her body, which were a result of blunt force trauma. Stella was also thin, had scars consistent with healed dog bite wounds, a traumatic injury to the tip of her tongue, muscle atrophy from not using her back legs and infections in both ears. She needed corrective surgery and lots of physical therapy to help her get her strength back. Although initially nervous, Stella gained confidence through positive reinforcement and was eventually able to support herself on her hind legs! The next big step for Stella was her behavioral treatment. While she was very social with people and easy to handle, she was noted to be intense and vocal with other dogs, making it difficult for her to find a "helper dog" who would tolerate her behavior. Through calm and controlled exposure to other dogs with our Behavior team, Stella was able to appropriately greet and interact with other dogs, marking huge progress. With the last step of her recovery complete, it was now time for this resilient girl to find her new home 🏠 When Rachel R. and her partner Drew visited the ASPCA Adoption Center, they met two other dogs they'd seen online before visiting Stella. Her personality and energy levels were a great fit, and the pair was undaunted to hear about her history and recovery. They took her home that very same day! Stella has settled in wonderfully to Drew and Rachel's lifestyle. They introduced Stella to their parents' dogs on Long Island and will take her hiking this summer.
