Today is the Feast of John the Evangelist. The perfect moment to zoom in on a stunning triptych dedicated to him and his namesake John the Baptist.
🖼️ The Triptych of John the Baptist and John the Evangelist (1479), by Flemish master Hans Memling (1430-1494) was created for St John's Hospital in Bruges, one of Europe’s oldest preserved hospital buildings. Today, a museum that tells the story of care, hospitality, and empathy. 🏥✨
🎥 Discover the rich iconography of this work in an engaging video conversation between Dr. Anna Koopstra, curator of early Netherlandish painting at @musea brugge, and Dr. Steven Zucker. Link in bio!
This video is part of a series created in collaboration with @Smarthistory, the not-for-profit organisation dedicated to the study of art history 🧐, and the Centre for Netherlandish Art at @MFABoston. 🏛️
In addition to this triptych, Memling created three of the seven other masterpieces kept at the museum, specifically for St John's Hospital, where they’ve been since the late 15th century. Experiencing these works in their historic setting is truly unforgettable.
✨ New! The museum now offers a digital experience, Closer to Memling, where you can explore the artist’s life and 15th-century masterpieces in an educational and interactive way. 🕵️♀️🔍
Don’t miss this gem on your next visit to Bruges! 🏰❤️
