At the 1950 FIFA World Cup, a legendary Uruguayan squad defeated the heavily favoured host nation, Brazil, in the deciding game of the four-team final group stage. The result is popularly known as the Maracanaço, after the stadium where the match was played 🏟️
Brazil took a 1-0 lead two minutes into the second half, but Juan Schiaffino levelled the match for the Celeste and Alcides Ghiggia scored the winner. “Only three people managed to silence the Maracanã: Frank Sinatra, the Pope and me,” Ghiggia used to say.
