National EMS Week May 18-24, 2025 National EMS Week was authorized in 1974 by President Gerald Ford to recognize and honor the contributions of Emergency Medical Service providers annually the 3rd week of May. EMS week is also a time to educate the public about EMS, and the essential service they provide to our communities, especially in rural areas where you’re most likely to be served by a team of volunteer EMS professionals. The Western Buffalo County Ambulance Service (WBCAS) provides emergency ambulance coverage to the Townships of Alma, Lincoln, Modena and Nelson, the City of Alma and Village of Nelson, 24/7/365. The WBCAS Board of Directors, established in 1970 and composed of representatives from each municipality served, have emphasized the need for professional, reliable and sustainable ambulance coverage in their communities. This collaborative approach to rural EMS ensures that when an accident or unexpected illness occurs, residents have access to immediate professional medical care and transportation to the hospital. WBCAS takes pride in many of their EMS providers maintaining NREMT and PHTLS certifications, allowing them to provide the highest level of BLS care available. Investments by the WBCAS consortium of municipalities have afforded the purchases of advanced medical equipment, including computer interpreted EKG monitors, end tidal carbon dioxide metering and the ability to measure a patient’s carbon monoxide level in the field. This equipment ensures early detection and monitoring of a patient’s cardiac, metabolic and respiratory status and has been proven to be a valuable tool in providing for better patient outcomes through earlier diagnosis, treatment and access to definitive care.
