Kol Chamira of Days
Within the tin of this year's time, crumb-few days remain.
We sweep the corners for the hours that will not come again.
We fold the linens of the final page upon the wall
And tuck them, crisply creased, away within the closet hall.
We dust the final seconds from the ticking of the clock
And brush the linted moments from the sleeves of this year's frock.
As final minutes fade to gold and pink and then to grey
We close the blinds on all the windows of our yesterday.
We turn off lights and climb the stairs that creak from memories tread
Then set aside our slippers and crawl happily in bed.
We settle in the warmth of recollections we’ve amassed
And dream beneath the blankets of the year that now has passed.
- Thad Krasnesky, 2024
(Kol chamira is the prayer that is said after a home has been cleansed of leaven. The intent of the prayer is to communicate that we did our best to clean, and if leaven remains it should not be counted against us. So too should we say a “kol chamira of days” at the end of the year. The year is done and if we did not use our time as well as we might have done, we ask that it not be held against us. We lived our lives to the best of our ability.)
