Our 2024 American crocodile annual report from the Turkey Point Clean Energy Center highlights another successful season with the second-highest nest count of 29 and the third-highest hatchling count of 529!
The station implemented a crocodile monitoring program in the 1970s shortly after nests for the species were discovered at the plant’s cooling canals. Fast forward to today, these reptiles have flourished from just a few hundred in the 1970s to now over 2,000! Conservation efforts by the team onsite have been key to downlisting the species from endangered to threatened in 2007.
PBS recently highlighted the program in a new feature, calling Turkey Point "a remarkable turnaround" and "a testament to the surprising ways that industry and nature can coexist."
