FREE CREATIVE ACTIVITIES FOR FAMILIES (ADULT & CHILD) IN THE COALFIELDS With special thanks to funding from Sunderland City Council's Coalfield Sunderland Community, we are delighted to bring you this fun and educational programme of activities for families in the Coalfields. These sessions are designed to help families reconnect, build confidence and develop essential life skills in a relaxed and supportive environment. Each week, we’ll focus on a different topic whether it’s budgeting, accessing additional community support for housing and food or managing household tasks, there’s something for everyone to learn. What makes these sessions extra special? We’ll be blending practical learning with a range of creative activities! From arts and crafts to hands-on projects, these activities will engage the whole family, offering a fun way to explore new ideas while spending quality time together. With each session, you'll not only take away valuable tips and resources but also enjoy a space where you can share information, swap experiences and grow as a family unit. It's a fantastic opportunity to connect with your local community and access support in a welcoming and creative environment. Family Ceramic Workshops During these special family ceramic sessions, you and your family will have the opportunity to create your very own personal and unique ceramic items for the home and garden. Using a variety of tools, cutters and ceramic techniques including 2D slab and 3D coil building, pinch pots and more, you will have the chance to create a personalised plaque, money box, or fruit bowl. The choice is yours! We will also discuss money-saving tips, such as how to make your own cost-effective household products and budget wisely to save for the future. These workshops combine creativity and practicality, leaving you with skills you can use long after the session ends. Batik Sessions In these sessions, families will be introduced to the basics of batik, a traditional technique that uses wax and fabric dyes to create colourful designs on cloth. Working on cotton fabric, you’ll learn simple methods of applying hot wax and layering colours to produce your own decorative wall hanging or fabric panel. These beginner-friendly sessions are a great way to explore textile art in a fun and relaxed environment. Textiles Sessions These creative textile workshops will help you and your children explore basic sewing and embellishment techniques. Using hand-stitching, fabric glue and decorative elements like buttons and felt, families can create simple textile pieces such as mini cushions, wall hangings or personalised fabric art. No prior experience is necessary as these sessions are a gentle introduction to working with fabric and thread. Important Information Sessions will take place at Trinity Methodist Church, Shiney Row. These workshops are designed to support the whole family. To qualify, you must live in the Coalfields. Parents are required to stay during the session and work together with their children on the creative activity. Booking is easy!
