Featuring an amazing survey of the evolution of the music of Beethoven, we explore how traditions of the past help create the music of the future - featuring music from all three 'periods' of Beethoven's development, culminating in his deeply spiritual "Heiliger Dankgesang" from his Quartet op. 132, expanded for string orchestra in an arrangment by the amazing group A Far Cry. In this masterpiece, Beethoven took techniques that were quite old - the use of a cantus firmus and imitative species counterpoint - combined with the revolution he brought about in form and structure - to create music that still seems deeply tonal, deeply romantic, and deeply avant-garde even today. We then finish with a work in a similar vein - the "Fantasia on a theme of Thomas Tallis" by Ralph Vaughan Williams - a work that took the deep English traditions Vaughan Williams curated in his collection of old English folk songs, combined with his studies in advanced harmonic practices with Maurice Ravel, to create something that sounds both ancient and totally new at the same time. When music moves forward, it is always thanks to those great geniuses that stood on the shoulders of the giants of the past.
