Have you ever wondered what happens to the cause of your headache when you take a painkiller for it? It may be that your body is actually dehydrated or stressed, causing your head to ache. We are so relieved by the quick relief of a tablet, allowing us to get on with our day, but what happens to the cause of the headache? Taking the tablet suppresses the dehydration and takes the pain “away”, but the dehydration is not taken care of. For a prolonged period of time this could mean that many metabolic systems can not function properly. For example, hormones, nutrients and oxygen require water to be able to move around the body to complete their functions. All of those metabolic functions become compromised by dehydration and therefore suppressed by the headache tablet. The headache tablet is the “suppressor” and the dehydration and body functions are being suppressed. When we do something to compensate for a thing that we are unable to deal with, like emotional pain, we create a suppression. For example, ignoring our emotional pain and not standing up for ourselves when someone bullies us, creates a suppression. People may try to suppress their sadness by drinking, using drugs or becoming abusive to others in order to feel better about themselves. Another example of suppression is coffee. It is a way of suppressing lack of sleep. The knock-on effect of that is using up energy generated by the adrenals, leaving the body even more depleted of energy. What happens to the thing that is being suppressed? Because the headache or symptom has “gone”, it is harder for the person to stay on their line of cure. This is their body’s natural ability to heal itself (if given the rest, mental clarity, exercise and nutrition it requires). The body or mind responds by expressing the problem in a new way, by having different symptoms, perhaps in another part of the body. When we have excess energy, we will not become sick for a while. When that energy runs out we start to “get sick”. When we feel that we don’t have energy, even though we eat right and rest enough, it is a sign of having suppressed something. When we don’t have enough energy, we can’t recuperate properly. When we don’t recuperate, it opens the door to inflammation and the next stages of degeneration. How do we find out where we have suppressed something in our bodies, emotions and lives? Perhaps we are suppressing something spiritually and feel disconnected and out of sorts? In a Kinesiology session, we always check for suppression with our clients. We do this by muscle monitoring to find the “suppressor” and what is being suppressed by it. We address the “suppressor” with various tools like talking about it, acupressure, references from books, colour, meridian work, anything that presents as the best way to deal with it (again all checked with muscle monitoring). This allows what was being suppressed to be seen and dealt with in an appropriate, supportive way. Finding how a client is suppressing something brings great insight to the person. It guides their understanding of how they are not living to their full potential. It provides them with tools to listen to their bodies and emotions and be the best version of themselves.
