Families are struggling and in need of support. The support required is multifaceted and dependent on each families unique needs. The aim of my PhD research was to identify the unmet support needs of families/carers across various sectors, including disability, mental health, and aged care. One of the significant findings of my research was that the service system itself was a major stressor for carers. This was before the introduction of the NDIS. For many PDA families, there is significant stress caused by the lack of widespread recognition and understanding of PDA within the service system and the broader community. This lack of understanding and constant need to educate others and advocate adds significantly to the stress load of parents/carers and is an issue that must be addressed.
