When people think of PTSD, they often associate it with major, one-time traumatic events like car accidents or natural disasters. But a 2022 study in the Journal of Traumatic Stress found that survivors of emotional abuse are twice as likely to develop PTSD compared to survivors of non-interpersonal trauma like accidents or injuries (Smith & Harris, 2022).
Why Emotional Abuse Triggers PTSD:
• Chronic Exposure: Emotional abuse isn’t a single incident—it’s ongoing harm, often for years.
• Betrayal Trauma: The pain is compounded when the abuser is someone you trusted, like a partner, family member, or boss.
• Gaslighting & Control: The constant invalidation and manipulation leave survivors in a state of confusion and fear, often replaying abusive moments.
If you’re experiencing flashbacks, hypervigilance, or emotional numbness after enduring emotional abuse, it’s not ‘just in your head.’ These are legitimate trauma responses to a sustained, harmful environment.
You didn’t imagine the harm, and you’re not ‘weak’ for struggling to process it. Your feelings are valid, and with the right support, healing from emotional abuse and PTSD is possible.
