"You have made us for Yourself, O Lord, and our heart is restless until it rests in You." —St. Augustine, Confessions, Book I, Chapter 1 Our souls were created with a longing, a divine ache that only God can fill. Throughout our lives, we seek happiness, peace, and purpose, often turning to the world's offerings—wealth, pleasure, success—only to find them fleeting. St. Augustine captures this truth perfectly, acknowledging that nothing created can satisfy the infinite desires of a human heart made by and for the Infinite God. In Psalm 42:1-2, we hear a similar cry: "As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, my God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God?" This imagery of thirst and yearning reminds us that our deepest need is not for the temporary but for the eternal. Just as a deer needs water to live, our souls need God's presence to thrive. St. Augustine's words challenge us to examine where we seek our rest. Do we find ourselves chasing shadows, always searching and never finding? The early Church Fathers often spoke of this restlessness as a kind of spiritual homesickness. We are pilgrims in this world, and while there is much beauty to enjoy, none of it is home. Our true home is in God, and every prayer, every Eucharist, every moment of grace is a taste of that homecoming. Ultimately, both St. Augustine and the psalmist call us to a life of seeking God above all else. In a world full of noise and distraction, the path to peace is found in returning to the Source. When we allow our restlessness to draw us nearer to God, it becomes a holy longing, a signpost that we are on the right path—the path that leads to eternal rest in His embrace.

Back in my little village in East Germany, behind the Iron curtain, when church attendance was sparse and life for any believer was one of constant repression, it was the courage of the philosopher-theologian Bonhoeffer and his hymn, written at the turn of the year, which gave me hope. His New Year hymn was always part of our end of year church service, when the little flock met in our house church on New Year’s Eve to receive the last blessing of the old year. At midnight my family went outside to ring the big bells in the bell tower on the cemetery lawn, It was realy just a short shed that looked like a steeple and sat on the ground near where the church once stood before the Second World war destroyed it. Oh, how I miss those bells. We older siblings took turns pulling the ropes of the two heavy bells, to ring the village from the old into the new year. The villagers always waited until the bells turned silent to begin their fireworks - the official way Germans welcome the New Year. Von guten Mächten wunderbar geborgen (translated as “By gracious powers wonderfully sheltered” or “By gentle powers lovingly surrounded”) is a much-loved hymn that is widely sung in German-speaking lands at the turn of the year, and it has guided us into the New Year also here also during our New Years’ retreats and 12 Days of Christmas Contemplations since. The protestant theologian, church leader, and resistance member Dietrich Bonhoeffer wrote these inspiring and melancholic words as a prayer toward the end of his 2-year imprisonment by the Nazis. He sent it to his family as an encouragement and profession of faith in December of 1944, just eight weeks before he was executed (and four months before Nazi Germany’s capitulation) at a time when much of Germany had been turned to rubble by the allied powers. Bonhoeffer’s life, witness, and death gives the song special resonance at the turn of the year. Especially in a year such as this. In another year filled with worry and war, where people are burdened and frightened by their personal and political situation, when whole families are buried under rubble and children are orphaned every single day somewhere in this world, in a year that we leave behind with grief and gratitude, I cannot think of a more comforting text. It acknowledges the pain and offers comfort and courage. It allows us to both hold our sorrows and cradle hope: “Surrounded by such true and gentle powers. So wondrously consoled and without fear, Thus will I spend with you these final hours And then together enter a new year. The worries of the old year still torment us. A few years ago I delivered the Sunday sermon at my local Unitarian Universalist church. I spoke on the “Divine Paradox” which can be reconciled within Hermetic philosophy. That paradox is between the apparent separateness we perceive here in the physical world, and the underlying truth of our Oneness within Spirit. In Hindu faiths they call that illusion of separateness Maya. Other facets of this paradox ask questions related to the gender of Spirit being the full range from God to Goddess and all the variations in between. According to the ancient Hermetic texts, that range of gender possibility is also found within humans, who were made in the image of our Divine Parents. In Witchcraft we sometimes call them The Two Who Move as One, and I abbreviate them as God/dess. There was a children’s story-telling time as part of that UU service, so I re-wrote the Hermetic “Genesis” story for those children and read it aloud to them.
